Altenburg

Altenburg is a small town and former royal seat near Weimar, Leipzig and Zwickau, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Its charming Christmas market is set against the enchanting backdrop of Hauptmarkt square, overlooked by baroque town houses, the Renaissance town hall and the towering Church of the Brethren. 'When Angels Play' is the central theme for this traditional festive event, and is also the motto of the torchlight tours, the night-time tower ascents and the Christmas concerts in the churches, palace and theatre. Altenburg at Christmas is a feast for the senses: hear the angelic voices of carol-singing choirs, see live animals at the Nativity scene and bake your own yuletide goodies in the Christmas marquee. It is a quiet, contemplative and richly rewarding experience, at which you may just hear the angels playing.
