Under a sea of twinkling lights, Rostock's historical town centre provides the stage for the largest Christmas markets in northern Germany. Grand old churches, town gates and gabled houses are bathed in a festive glow. The excitement centres around splendid Neuer Markt square in the heart of Rostock. Plenty of anticipation surrounds the arrival of Father Christmas. Will he come by sleigh, boat or even by tram? It's always a fun surprise! The traditional specialities on offer range from smoked sausage and smoked fish to Christmas cookies and schmalzkuchen (bite-size doughnuts). On the fairytale castle stage, you can watch dance performances featuring Father Christmas, a storyteller and the ice princess. Christmas is given a nostalgic twist at the historical market, while the craft market in St. Peter's Church (3-5 December) features exquisite items crafted by hand using medieval methods. You can also go for a spin on the carousels and enjoy traditional seasonal music at the Christmas concerts.
