Christmas Markets

Chemnitz

Discover the magic of Christmas, straight from the pages of a storybook. At 4pm on 26 November, a trumpet fanfare from the tower marks the official opening of this traditional Christmas market. At 2pm the following day, the grand miners' parade ushers in the festive season with an extensive programme of music. The seasonally decorated town centre is transformed into a winter wonderland, with more than 200 stalls and various Erzgebirge traditions. These include a five-storey Christmas pyramid, a traditional festive arch, a giant musical box, incense burners, rocking horse figures and nutcrackers. Roll back the centuries at the medieval market (Innere Klosterstrasse), where artisans, entertainers, fire-eaters and musicians await you, all in historical costume. There is also a festival of Erzgebirge folklore on 27 and 28 November in the Stadthalle. On display at Lichtenstein Palace are 140 Nativity scenes from 33 countries and four continents. A guided tour of the town with an Advent calendar theme highlights the special aspects of this magical time of year in Chemnitz.
