Speyer

During the festive season, the air outside the Old Mint in Maximilianstrasse is full of delicious aromas - glühwein, roasted almonds, Alsace Flammkuchen ('pizza' with onions, bacon and cream) and much more. At the heart of the action are stalls hosted by eight towns twinned with Speyer from as far away as Rwanda. Browse for handmade speciality items in the town hall courtyard and watch the artisans at work in the marquees. A spectacular experience is when the Old Gate, one of the tallest town gates in Germany, is lit up by a dramatic curtain of Bengal fire as the Christmas trumpets sound.
