Christmas Markets

Königstein Fortress

Königstein - a historical fairytale; copyright: Festung Königstein gGmbH

'Königstein Fortress - a winter fairytale' is the theme for this enchanting Christmas market. More than 1.3 kilometres of fairy lights bathe this seasonal extravaganza in a romantic glow. Set within historical walls, the event is hosted by Königstein's very own Father Christmas and Friedrich von Kyaw, the fortress commander. Travelling entertainers put on enthralling performances, medieval players act out classic fairytales, musicians play delightful Christmas pieces from centuries past and artisans display exquisite wares. The little ones can let their creativity run wild in the elves' workshop in the casemate courtyard. A Nativity scene with real animals, a traditional Christmas pyramid from the Erzgebirge mountains and 250 decorated fir trees also add to the magic. The advent calendar adorning Germany's oldest surviving barracks, dating back some 420 years, is the longest in the country at 112 metres. A new illuminated window is opened each day in December.
