Berchtesgaden is a traditional mountain town surrounded by the picturesque German Alps. On each of the four weekends before Christmas, its wonderful little Christmas market is lit up by a sea of festive lights on snow-covered Schlossplatz square. Browsing the stalls for yuletide delights against a backdrop of seasonal music - it's hard to think of a more romantic experience at Christmas. St. Nicholas and his entourage make an appearance on 5 and 6 December.
