Come the festive season, the Minden Christmas market stretches all the way from the market square along Obermarktstrasse to lower Bäckerstrasse. It is always a great event, with a Lilliput train and horse-drawn carriage rides available on the first three weekends, beginning in the town hall courtyard, where St. Nicholas and the German equivalent of Punch and Judy provide just some of the excitement from 1 to 24 December. The programme of entertainment changes every day and includes music ensembles, trumpeters, fire eaters and ice sculptors. Join in the celebrations for the Christmas Party on 4 December which features a varied programme of music and activities amid the Christmas market stalls. If you can tear yourself away from the market, the town centre is open for Sunday shopping on 5 December. Guided tours with a seasonal slant are a great way to explore the history of the 1,200-year-old town.
