The beautiful briny sea
Lying off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein in the North Frisian Wadden Sea are the islands of Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Pellworm and the Nordstrand peninsula.
The healthy, bracing North Sea air, the surf, and the ebb and flow of the tides make every family holiday here a wonderful experience.
Amrum is like a giant sandpit for all the family. The "Kniepsand" is the widest sandy beach in Europe: 15km long, more than 1km wide and nothing but fine, white, Caribbean-style sand. Wyk on the island of Föhr is a popular bathing spot for families with young children: the beach shelves gently and the sea is relatively calm. Most beaches offer a varied programme of children's activities and are clearly designated (e.g. family beach or naturist beach), making it easy for everyone to find their own favourite. A hot tip for cool days are the saunas right on the beach - to cool off, just plunge into the refreshing North Sea.
