Beaches and adventure
Rügen, Germany's largest island, has so many charms that everyone's holiday dreams come true.
Rügen's fine sandy beaches go on for miles and are perfect for sunny weather. Binz is the island's largest seaside resort and Thiessow on the Mönchgut peninsula is an insider's tip: when the wind blows from the west, holidaymakers can still enjoy its long, secluded sandy beach, which is sheltered by dunes and beech groves. Fun and adventure seekers will enjoy the climbing forest in Bergen, which is laid out in a deciduous forest covering an area of 16,000m². At the visitors' centre at the Königsstuhl chalk cliffs, Rügen's signature landmark, a 2,000m² exhibition brings the secrets of the Jasmund National Park to life through a range of fascinating hands-on, interactive exhibits. A real must is a ride on the Racing Roland steam train, which has been chugging its way across the island for over 100 years. Today the railway links the seaside resorts in the south-east of the island between Lauterbach and the Baltic seaside resort of Göhren.
