Sensational swimming in Bavaria

Lake Ammersee, the third-largest lake in Bavaria, was formed after the Ice Age. Close to Munich and Augsburg, it is one of the region's most popular tourist destinations.

At Lake Ammersee you'll never be stuck for something to do. All around the lake are landing stages and jetties. The paddle steamer, which gently makes its way from one side of the lake to the other, is a very special attraction. If you get off at Utting, it's not far to the Ex Ornamentis maize maze, which offers lots of exciting children's activities. The various beaches and beer gardens on the banks of the lake are perfect for enjoying the scenery and soaking up the sun. Lake Ammersee has shallow water for splashing with children and deep water for proper swimming and diving. Windsurfing, waterskiing or sailing are all ideal ways to explore the lake - either on your own or in a group with one of the many windsurfing and sailing schools. Older children (aged 10 and over) can tackle the Ammersee high-ropes course, which requires dexterity and climbing skills at head-spinning heights.
