Tip
In summer, the climatic health resort of Hitzacker on the Elbe has many walking-related attractions and is popular with cyclists and walkers. Two walking trails with the Wanderbares Deutschland seal of approval start in Hitzacker: the Klötzie-Stieg trail and the Wendland trail.

Along the Elbe through Lower Saxony

66km long, this trail between Schnackenburg and Hitzacker - Neu-Darchau explores two national nature parks, the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Meadows biosphere reserve and the Elbufer-Drawehn nature reserve.

For most of its route the Elbhöhenweg follows the course of the river, on the Elbe dike for long stretches. There is plenty to see and do along the way: wildlife to watch in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Meadows biosphere reserve, the medieval town of Hitzacker with its inviting cafés to explore and a flying visit to the Bronze Age in the Hitzacker Archaeological Centre. Not to mention hilltops such as the Höhbeck to climb for panoramic views of the Elbe and its meadows. Other wayside attractions include a number of lookout towers, the old Dömitz railway bridge and a carefully collated museum on the history of the Cold War inner-German border in Schnackenburg.
