Hannover Old Town Hall, copyright Jochen Keute
The Royal Gardens in the district of Herrenhausen are an experience in themselves. The 4,200 metre “Red Thread”, a painted line on the road surface, is an excellent way of exploring the city's sights: the New Town Hall and Old Town Hall, old quarter, the Leineschloss state government building, the various museums and the opera house. There are impressive panoramic views of the town from the New Town Hall. A sloping lift takes you up to the dome of this magnificent edifice dating from the period of Kaiser Wilhelm.

Royal Gardens at Herrenhausen
The most important styles and genres of landscape design are authentically represented here: the baroque garden in the French style, the English landscaped garden and the botanical garden. On a 135 hectare plot, the Hannover electors and kings created the Great Garden (Grosser Garten), the Berggarten, Georgengarten and the Guelph Garden (Welfengarten) – together known as the Herrenhausen gardens.

The New Town Hall
Visitors are often surprised to hear this magnificent building described as the “new” town hall. Its size and the splendour of its architecture suggest something more historic, a remnant from more majestic times when Hannover was still a kingdom. In fact it was ceremoniously opened on 20 June 2021 after a 12 year construction period.

Historic old quarter
The Old Town Hall and Marktkirche church, most southerly examples of North German brick Gothic architecture, set in a picturesque corner of town surrounded by medieval timber-framed buildings. Visitors can relax and enjoy the many pavement cafés and typical Lower Saxony bars and restaurants.
