Special tip
Two pirate ships, the "Jachara" and the "Norden", tour the coast and drop anchor at several ports every year in July or August. On trips lasting two hours, aspiring pirates young and old can experience life aboard a pirate ship.

Water, wind and wide-open spaces

Wonderful days at the beach, childcare facilities and a variety of excursions to aquariums, museums, zoos and adventure parks mean family holidays packed with fun.

The beaches here stretch for more than 384 kilometres, so swimmers will be spoilt for choice. This coastline offers lots of variety: natural beaches, beautiful sandy dunes and unspoilt cliffs such as the Brodten cliffs near Travemünde. Topping the list of family beaches are Weidefeld beach near Kappeln, the beach near Laboe, Schönberg beach east of Kiel, Scharbeutz and the Baltic health resort of Grömitz. There's also plenty for families to discover away from the beach. The Museum Shipyard in Flensburg takes families right into the world of 18th and 19th century shipbuilding; children can even be helped to build their own little dream boat. The museum railway at Schönberg beach is like travelling back in time: historical narrow-gauge trains pulled by historical steam or diesel engines run between Schönberg beach and Schönberg every summer weekend. Children with a passion for rays, sharks and tropical marine creatures will love the Fehmarn marine life centre, one of the largest aquarium complexes in Europe. Or enjoy an exciting day out at Hansa Park in Sierksdorf, which offers 11 spectacular themed worlds and over 125 shows and attractions - including fabulous views of the Baltic Sea. To make a change from the beach, children can use up their energy and adults can relax at pool complexes such as Aqua Tropicana in Damp or the Ostsee Therme thermal baths in Scharbeutz. Horse lovers are also well catered for: from beginners' riding lessons to trekking through beautiful countryside, Schleswig-Holstein is every equestrian's dream.
