East Frisian islands

Special tip
The island of Spiekeroog boasts Germany's only horse-drawn railway. It operates between Easter and the autumn school holidays, taking 10 minutes to reach a now unused bathing beach.

Family paradise islands

The seven North Sea islands - Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge - are strung out like pearls off the East Frisian coast.

The East Frisian islands are a paradise for families. With fine sandy beaches stretching for miles and an exciting programme of children's events, there's always something to do: games, sports, creative activities and family festivities. Parents can relax in a wicker beach chair with bright-striped cushions while the children build sandcastles or race across the sand on spacehoppers. A bonus when choosing a holiday with children: most of the beaches shelve gently and are supervised by lifeguards during the high season. All the islands have a seawater swimming pool: Juist, for example, has a seawater pool complex with a waterslide, a water cannon and a counter-current section. There are many other ways for families to enjoy action-packed days on the East Frisian islands too. The national park centre on Norderney offers child-friendly mudflat excursions in the Lower Saxony Wattenmeer National Park on which children and adults alike can get to know the mysterious habitat that is the sea bed. Children under 12 and their parents will enjoy a visit to the "Spöölhus" (playhouse) on Langeoog. This has all kinds of fun zones including a soft-play area for little ones, a colourful ball pool with a slide and a two-storey playhouse with a kitchen and a living room. How about a ride on the lovingly restored historical steam locomotive that runs between the island station and the ferry quay on the island of Borkum? Family holidays on Juist, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog or Wangerooge are extremely idyllic and carefree - because cars are not allowed. Even bicycles are banned on Baltrum and Spiekeroog.
