Keep fit or chill out

Lake Steinhude in Lower Saxony offers lots of sports and fun activities but it's also perfect for relaxing family days.

Lake Steinhude, one of north-west Germany's biggest lakes, has become a hotspot for windsurfers, thanks to its favourable southern winds. The man-made island is especially child-friendly: it offers a lovely sandy beach, lots of play equipment, large areas for sunbathing and a shallow fringe of water. Children will also enjoy the large, supervised "Weisse Düne" beach in Mardorf with its playground and trampolines. The many bridle paths and holiday centres area around Lake Steinhude make it an excellent choice for a relaxing riding holiday. Or how about stepping back into prehistoric times? Münchehagen Dinosaur Park in Rehburg-Loccum is an open-air museum with more than 220 life-size replica dinosaurs to discover on a 2.5km circular trail. Young explorers can also excavate fossils and make clay dinosaur models at the visitors' centre.
