Suggested excursions
Celle is an ideal base for exploring the delightful surroundings. Two scenic routes pass close to the town - the Lower Saxony Mills Route and the Lower Saxony Asparagus Route (570km), which runs through the main asparagus-growing areas. Other attractive excursion destinations include romantic Lüneburg Heath and Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen. Lower Saxony Mills Route
The Lower Saxony Mills Route runs for around 250 kilometres from the open moorland and marshes of the Teufelsmoor (Devil's Moor) through the eastern lowlands to Celle and Gifhorn, the two former ducal towns in the Südheide (Southern Heath) area. Lower Saxony is perfect mill country - it is windy, it has plenty of rivers and it is near the coast. This route links more than 120 different types of mill. Gifhorn is home to the International Mill Museum, the only one of its kind in the world, which has 15 original mills from across the world. Lüneburg Heath
Lüneburg Heath lies between the Elbe, Aller and Weser rivers and the cities of Bremen, Braunschweig, Hamburg and Hannover. It is a natural landscape with a great deal of variety - glacial valleys, moraines, morainic plains, heathland, moors and wooded areas. Lüneburg Heath has a rich cultural heritage and can be explored on foot, by bike, on horseback, by carriage or in a canoe. Serengeti Park Hodenhagen
Serengeti Park Hodenhagen (200 hectares, 42km from Celle) has a range of exotic animals in outdoor enclosures. Visitors can take an exciting 10km safari by car or Serengeti bus and see animals such as giraffes, lions, rhinos and elephants. Monkey Land has 200 animals tumbling about in outdoor enclosures, including some that are walk-through. There is also an amusement park with rides.
