Easter Traditions in Germany

The Easter Celebrations are the oldest and most important celebrations of Christianity. Easter markets throughout the country exhibit Easter eggs and spring-themed local arts and crafts.
In Saxony, in the area of Lusatia - Lausitz - the traditonal Easter parades with more than 250 horses and men in traditional costumes are especially famous.
In Franconia, in southern Germany, you can discover colorfully decorated Easter fountains in many town centers for about two weeks starting on Good Friday every year.
Experience the "Easter-Fires" in northern Germany where people meet to burn big piles of wooden logs, sometimes with a witch puppet on top, to end the cold winter season. Beer, hot punch and grilled sausages are offered. And did you know that the first edible Easter bunnies, of pastry and sugar, were produced in Germany in the early 1800s?
