Nature & greenery

Darmstadt Herrngarten, Copyright Pro Regio Darmstadt
Herrngarten was originally laid out at the end of the 16th century and redesigned as an English-style garden at a later date. To the north-east is the adjoining rococo Prince Georg's Garden. Rosenhöhe Park offers far-reaching views from its elevated position on the hill. At the top, a rosarium and rose gardens join the mausoleums and graves of the grand ducal family.

Herrngarten
Herrngarten is the largest and oldest park in the centre of Darmstadt, and its origins can be traced back as far as the mid 16th century. It started as three large and many smaller gardens which were laid out in the baroque style as kitchen and herb gardens. The park is the "green lungs" of the city and of the densely populated residential areas of Martinsviertel and Johannesviertel.

Prince Georg's Garden
This rococo garden is linked historically with Herrngarten Park. Designed by Prince Georg Wilhelm, it is a beautifully laid out, typical rococo garden based on a multi-axial, geometric ground plan with paths running perpendicular to one another and diagonally, and fountains and sundials at the points where they intersect.

Rosenhöhe Park
Rosenhöhe Park offers far-reaching views from its elevated position In the early 19th century the former vineyard was transformed into a landscaped garden, based on the English model. Circular flowerbeds were planted along with trees in picturesque groups. The court architect added tea houses and pavilions, some of which can still be seen today.
