Nature as modern art

“Gardens without Limits” is a project evolved during the last few years in the region where Germany, Luxembourg and France meet. The largest member of the scheme is the Garden of the Senses in Merzig, a small town in the Saarland. This garden brings together many different aspects of garden design. A series of enclosed spaces awakens all our senses and shows how man uses nature to create works of art.

Garden of the Senses, Merzig

This green oasis on Kreuzberg hill opened in 2002 and has become a hot tip for garden lovers and anyone wanting a break from the hustle and bustle of life. As the name of the garden suggests, visitors pass through a succession of hedge-lined “rooms” designed to appeal to all the senses: The theme of water, a vital element in any garden, is established by a geometric sculpture of concrete steles and shallow ponds right at the entrance to the garden. In the garden of sounds, visitors can create their own sounds using a variety of objects - or listen as they echo in the wind. The garden of colours has flowers of every hue and illustrates the effects of combining different colours. The gravel garden, the largest area here, has a special microclimate with sun-loving herbaceous perennials flowering profusely in the summer. With its extensive programme of events, the Garden of the Senses remains true to the original spirit of gardens. It is a wonderful, living work of art which awakens the senses and brings people together.

Villeroy & Boch Abbey Garden, Mettlach

The Villeroy & Boch Abbey Garden in Mettlach includes the Old Tower, the oldest religious building in the Saarland region, a burial chapel constructed over 1,000 years ago. The garden is named after the 18th century Benedictine abbey which is still the headquarters of the famous Villeroy & Boch ceramics company. In 1850 Eugen von Boch laid out the abbey garden in the style of a park, planting over 30 tree species from all around the world as well as native deciduous and evergreen trees. Thanks to this great variety, the abbey garden is a kaleidoscope of colour and form throughout the year.
