Impressive discoveries

For centuries, Erfurt was known as the city of flowers. Martin Luther once said that the people of Erfurt were the “gardeners of the Holy Roman Empire”. Today egapark, a wonderful combination of leisure, recreation and magnificent flowers, is re-establishing the city's green reputation. Its displays are hands-on, tactile, fascinating and very beautiful.

egapark Erfurt

This site on the edge of the city became a park as long ago as 1920. It hosted the “Erfurt in Bloom” garden show in 1950 and was redesigned by the landscape architect Reinhold Lingner for the 1st International Garden Show of Socialist Nations in 1961. Since reunification, egapark has developed into one of the most beautiful parks in Germany. It covers an area of 360,000 square metres and presents a varied range of themes in fascinating ways. egapark boasts Europe's largest ornamental flowerbed: 6,000 square metres with 150,000 spring flowers and a magnificent display of herbaceous perennials in summer. The rose garden is a true paradise: 28,000 square metres with 450 rose varieties. Graceful grasses can be admired in the grass and herbaceous garden. The Japanese rock and water garden (7,000 square metres) is inspired by Japanese garden design.
