Dating from 1231, this is the only undamaged mountainside castle on the Rhine. It is an impressive complex, comprising a keep and various groups of buildings, dungeons and baileys perched in split level fashion on a pinnacle of rock overlooking the river. The furnishings provide a true picture of life in a medieval castle. Nowadays the Marksburg is the headquarters of the German Castle Association.
