Museums

Saarbrücken History Museum, copyright Kongress- und Touristik Service Region Saarbrücken GmbH
The Saarland Regional History Museum vividly documents the history of the Saar region using a large number of installations. The Museum of Pre-History and Early History is also interesting.

Saar Historical Museum
Saar Historical Museum, which opened in 1988, gives a detailed insight into the turbulent history of the Saarland in the 20th century. Covering an area of 1,600m², the museum's permanent exhibition uses archaeological finds to illustrate how a Renaissance palace came to be built on the remains of a medieval fort. It also tackles the subjects of the First World War and the Nazi period. You can even view an actual detention cell used by the Gestapo. Daily life at this time is portrayed using photos, posters and excerpts from films, while a "rubble kitchen" from the post-war years shows how people managed to cook, clean and live in unimaginably cramped conditions. Closed on Mondays

Museum of Pre-History and Early History
An archaeological window into the Saarland's past, the Museum of Pre-History and Early History displays a huge range of exhibits, from a Stone Age hand-axe to Merovingian disc brooches, which were crafted from gold and gemstones. The focal point of the museum is the Celtic grave of the Reinheim princess (from around 400 BC), with its exquisite decorations and priceless accessories. There are also relics from Imperial Roman times (1-5 AD), ceramic and glass vessels, tools and equipment, coins, figures made from stone, bronze and clay, inscriptions and murals found in a villa in Mechem. Closed on Mondays, 24, 25 and 31 December, and 1 January. Guided tours available on request.

Saarland Museum
Saarland Museum's Modern Gallery showcases important works by the international avant garde, from impressionism to contemporary art. The Old Gallery contains arts and crafts, paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, while works by contemporary Saarland artists are displayed in the State Gallery. The museum also has an impressive collection of German and French impressionism from 1950 onwards. Paintings from artists involved in the "The Bridge" movement have proved very popular – particularly works by the Blue Rider group, for example Franz Marc's 'The Blue Horse'. Closed on Mondays, 24 and 25 December and 1 January, guided tours available on request.
