Mettlach
Saar Bow

Between Merzig and Saarburg, the River Saar boasts a remarkable natural feature. On route through the foothills of the Hunsrück the river loops back on itself, cutting a seven-kilometre bow-like shape around a tree-clad ridge.

Germany's prettiest river bow
A spectacular natural feature – over millions of years, the River Saar has cut its way through layers of rock. This has created a sharp 180-degree bend in the course of the river, which flows back towards its source for a while. The best views of this magnificent sight are to be had from Cloef viewpoint, or from Montclair castle ruins on the wooded hills within the bow itself.
