Nature & greenery

The countryside around Kelheim is as picturesque as the town itself. The Altmühl valley, one of Germany's largest nature reserves, is a paradise for hikers, walkers and cyclists. The Danube Gorge - with Weltenburg Abbey - is both idyllic and spectacular.

Altmühl Valley
The Altmühl Valley has delightful scenery and is one of Germany's largest nature reserves. It is a fascinating landscape created by the powerful forces of nature over millions of years. The Romans and other rulers throughout history have built fortifications and castles here, splendid palaces, fine churches and enormous abbeys. The Altmühl Valley is great for walking, cycling and sailing. You can hunt for fossils in its quarries, go free climbing on its crags or - higher still - there's gliding or hang-gliding. Cyclists can explore the region on the Altmühl Valley cycle path, one of Germany's most popular long-distance cycle trails.

Danube Valley
The best way to experience the wild, romantic Danube Gorge between Weltenburg and Kelheim is by boat. Cruise ships depart from Kelheim and Weltenburg several times a day. The gorge has densely wooded hillsides dotted with castles and stately homes. The highlight is Weltenburg Abbey, which sits right beneath the cliffs.
