Nature & greenery

On the North Sea coast you can enjoy good clean air, beautiful weather, foaming waves, the ebb and flow of the tides, boat trips, watersports and rest and relaxation in an invigorating climate. Lying just off the North Sea coast is a series of small Hallig islands with seal banks, the only ones of their kind anywhere in the world. The coastal mudflats of the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer national park and biosphere reserve are another highlight of the region. There are foot and cycle paths along the dykes. Wicker beach chairs provide protection from the wind and sun.
The coastal mudflats are one of the last remaining extensive natural landscapes in central Europe, stretching from Holland to Denmark. Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park is central Europe's largest national park. The Wattenmeer, a strip of land between the high and low water marks which is covered with seawater at high tide and accessible when the tide recedes, is one of the most fascinating natural habitats in the world. One cubic metre of its mud contains more biomass than the same amount of soil in a tropical rain forest.
The Friedrichskoog seal centre is located in the same bay as Büsum, but at its southernmost point, and provides many opportunities to learn about seals and whales. Throughout the year you can observe adult seals on land and underwater in a basin system which has been designed to resemble their natural surroundings. At feeding times there are short talks on seal biology and the work of the seal centre.
