Permanent exhibitions

Leipzig Old Town Hall, copyright LTS A. Schmidt
Leipzig's history is told at the Museum of City History in the Old Town Hall. The 27 years J.S. Bach spent in Leipzig are the subject of the museum at the Bach Archive. The Bach Museum has historical instruments that still sound as wonderful as ever. A permanent exhibition about dictatorship and resistance in the former East Germany brings that part of history to life with over 2,500 exhibits.

Museum of City History
The Museum of City History is in the Old Town Hall on the market square. It has 529,000 exhibits and is one of Germany's largest museums of cultural history. The theme of the permanent exhibition is "Leipzig's never-ending history". Special themed exhibitions are regularly on show in addition to the permanent exhibition about Leipzig's history.

Bach Museum
The exhibition in the Bach Museum at the Bach Archive is devoted to the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Historical instruments and furniture dating back to the 18th century are on display alongside precious manuscripts, documents, graphic works and printed music. The audio room and audioguide (free of charge) in German and English also help bring the exhibition to life.

Leipzig Forum of Contemporary History and Stasi Museum
The Leipzig Forum of Contemporary History and Stasi Museum bring a historical experience back to life with impressive displays about the history of the Soviet-occupied zone and the former East Germany after 1945 as well as developments since 1989. Special exhibitions, events and an information centre with a library and media suite underline the role of the forum as a place to reflect about Germany past and present.
