Hesse

Hesse is the heart of Germany, where you'll encounter history at every turn. The picturesque towns in the region are known for their traditional local festivals and attractive half-timbered buildings.

Wiesbaden, the stylish health resort, hosts Germany's biggest street theatre festival. Goethe was born in Frankfurt, today Germany's financial and commercial centre. Frankfurt is also the cultural capital of Hesse offering a wide range of opera, theatre and museums. The Museum Embankment Festival is a real must. Hesse is also on the German Fairytale Route. This region, the most densely forested in Germany, is where Little Red Riding Hood met the wicked wolf, according to the fairytale. It was also home to Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
Bad Wildungen, whose healing springs were acclaimed as long ago as the 14th century, is a "royal spa" with an elegant atmosphere. Kassel, once the capital of the great kingdom of Westphalia, provided refuge for the Huguenots. The Brothers Grimm Museum, among others, is well worth a visit. Hesse also offers some very tempting and delicious treats. Don't miss the cider and the wines of the Rheingau region.
