UNESCO sites in western Germany

MESSEL PIT Fossil Site, UNESCO World Heritage Site
There's an impressive list of West Germany UNESCO World Heritage sites. Essen is home to what is surely the finest coal mine in the world, a number of castles and the famous Loreley rock are found along the romantic Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Aachen, Cologne and Speyer boast impressive cathedrals and Trier, meanwhile, is home to a number of Roman monuments. The sheer variety of Germany's natural and cultural heritage is well illustrated by the Roman Limes, Messel Pit Fossil Site, Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces in Brühl, the famous abbey in Lorsch and Völklingen Ironworks, the largest ironworks in the Saarland.

Learn more about West Germany UNESCO World Heritage sites:

Step back in time 49 million years ago at the Messel Pit Fossil Site, where you can learn about continental drift and take a look at high-quality exhibits of 40 dinosaurs. You can even take a trip to Völklingen Ironworks, now a fascinating interactive theme park with colossal machines, hot-blast stoves, and the world's only sloping lift. Everywhere you look, you can find West Germany UNESCO World Heritage sites. These sites, according to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, represent the "identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity."
