Richard Wagner Festival

Every year in July and August the Bayreuth Festival attracts visitors from around the world with its exceptional productions of Richard Wagner's operas. Wagner's celebrated works, including the "The Ring of the Nibelung" as well as "Tristan and Iseult", are performed in alternation at the festival theatre, which was built especially for the event. The performances are one of the highlights of the German festival season.

Highlight of the German festival season
In July and August, devotees of Richard Wagner's music flock to Bayreuth in northern Bavaria to join in the celebrations for this sensational festival, which was conceived by the world-famous composer himself. Also known as the Richard Wagner Festival, it presents ten of his major works every year. Featuring performers of the highest-calibre, the productions attract music-lovers from all over the world and offer outstanding cultural entertainment. The superlative acoustics in the theatre lend the festival an extra-special atmosphere.

Bayreuth New Palace, Copyright Kongress- und Tourismuszentrale Bayreuth
Margravine Wilhelmine, sister of Frederick the Great, transformed Bayreuth into a glittering centre of art and culture 250 years ago. Bayreuth's Margravial Opera House is an exceptionally beautiful baroque theatre. The town also boasts a number of attractive palaces and castles, the Hermitage (Eremitage) park with its enchanted grottoes and fountains, the Festival Hall with its acclaimed acoustics and 22 interesting museums.

Art & culture

The Richard Wagner Festival has been the highlight of Bayreuth's cultural scene for more than 125 years. The Festival Hall is worthy of a visit even outside festival times. The Bayreuth Art Museum and Iwalewa Museum of African Art contain fascinating exhibits and there are numerous music and drama festivals offering the highest calibre of cultural entertainment.
