Sylt
Village of Kampen on the island of Sylt

Poets and painters from the 19th century felt inspired by the island's grandiose natural beauty, the expanse of the North Sea, the dunes and the endless sandy beaches, and created the basis for a sophisticated ambience of art, opulence and joie de vivre that can still be felt today.

Brand names and art
Kampen, with the feel of a big town and a holiday resort, is characterised by nature, art and the joy of an opulent and sophisticated lifestyle. In this little island village of only 700 inhabitants, leading fashion labels the same as those found in the capitals of the world are as abundant as the art galleries, with their valuable, sought-after works by artists of all styles and genres.

Places of interest

Sylt's attractions are mainly shaped by maritime and historical traditions. St. Severin's Church for instance, is one of the oldest churches on the North Frisian Islands. The Uwe Düne sand dune is the highest elevation on Sylt, and offers a stunning panoramic view of the whole island. The Hörnum lighthouse is the southernmost point of the island.

Museums

The array of museums on Sylt is characterised by a sense of tradition and a closeness to nature. The Vogelkojen were once used to catch wild ducks. In Kampen, they now serve as a natural history reserve. The history of the island and the everyday life of island inhabitants in the past can be explored in the local history museum and the Old Frisian House museum.
