Dietrich Buxtehude 1637-1707

A celebrated organist, Dietrich Buxtehude is thought to have been born in Bad Oldesloe in 1637. His glorious Abendmusik (evening music) at St. Mary's Church enjoyed wide renown; Johann Sebastian Bach made a lengthy pilgrimage to Lübeck to hear him play. It was in the shadow of the same magnificent Gothic church that Thomas Mann wrote Buddenbrooks. Buxtehude's musical legacy lives on in Lübeck, even today.
