Food & drink

The culinary offerings in the Lüneburg Heath region are more varied than you'd think. Local cuisine is sure to please, and there are some great establishments off the beaten track. Tucked away are romantic cafés, cosy country inns and traditional farmhouses with their charming shops. Specialities worth trying include the ubiquitous heath potatoes, superb locally produced honey and Heidschnuckenbraten (roast heathland lamb).

"Löns Krug" hotel restaurant
Located in the village of Winkel just outside Gifhorn, this typical heathland inn is named after local poet Hermann Löns, who was a frequent guest from 1904 to 1914. Local goat and lamb dishes feature prominently on the extensive menu, alongside seasonal delicacies such as asparagus and game. The kitchen will also serve hay-cooked leg of heath lamb if you order in advance. In summer, treat yourself to coffee and homemade cakes on the beautiful garden terrace, under the shade of chestnut and sycamore trees.

"Ringhotel Heidesee" hotel restaurant
Offering views across Heidsee Lake, this restaurant with garden terrace is idyllically located in a verdant landscape on the outskirts of Gifhorn. Diners can choose from a mouthwatering range of seasonal and regional dishes, plus culinary specials that change on a monthly basis. Indulge in one of the delicious cakes baked in the restaurant's own patisserie, or unwind after a busy day in the quaint hotel bar with its cosy corner fireplace.

"Gifhorner Brauhaus" brewery restaurant
A visit to this charming brewery is an unforgettable experience. Whether you're eating in the restaurant, enjoying a bite in the beer garden or holding a private party in the dining hall, you'll be greeted by a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The traditional German menu boasts a huge range of hearty, delicious choices. After picking your salad and starter, plump for a tasty schnitzel or one of the giant steaks, both of which are house specialities. Other classics include currywurst (bratwurst in curry sauce) and the ever-popular schweinshaxe (crispy pork joint).
