Art & culture

Eisenach is renowned for having a remarkable cultural history. Its museums, memorials and churches are of great historical importance and commemorate the life and works of a number of famous figures, including Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach's House
The house where the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach is believed to have been born stands on Frauenplan. The rooms and interior furnishings give visitors a vibrant insight into the life of a middle-class family in around 1700. For many generations, various members of this musical family worked as town musicians and organists in Thuringia. The house is full of historical exhibits and an extensive collection of musical instruments, which you can hear on a guided tour.

Thuringian Museum
The Thuringian Museum is housed in a wing of the baroque palace. Its main exhibits include Thuringian porcelain, faience earthenware, glassware, graphic art, wrought iron, paintings from the second half of the 19th century as well as examples of cultural heritage and works by representatives of Expressive Realism. Visitors can also admire the rococo-style banqueting hall.
