The fascinating German Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein is one of a kind. Housed in a listed, late 19th century villa since 1973 it contains a permanent exhibition of virtually every type of gemstone in the world.

A world of glittering gems
Even the museum's name has an irresistible, magical resonance. For any lover of precious stones, the German Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein is not to be missed. Experts as well as amateurs are enthralled as they enter this world of glittering gems. Visitors marvel at the cut and uncut stones, precious minerals and countless rare and unusual gems. As well as gemstones and diamonds, there are also skilfully carved engravings and sculptures as well as exquisite minerals to admire. No other organisation explores the subject of gemstones in such depth and breadth.

Exhibits

The result of cutting and polishing the raw stones can be seen in the glowing colours of the treasures displayed here in what is probably the most comprehensive gemstone exhibition in the world. The total length of the display cases is 280 metres and more than 9,000 exhibits are on display, even including gems from outer space. Other attractions include a major diamond exhibition and a collection of Greek and Roman sculptures illustrating the development of the art of engraving. The whole tour is packed with moving, interactive exhibits. At the press of a button moving three-dimensional models demonstrate how gems and diamonds are cut.
