Further Modern Artists

Emil Nolde
He loved "the music of colours" and was one of the leading painters of expressionism. Today his house in Sebüll (North Friesland), built by artist, is a museum. The Brücke Museum in Berlin, as well, owns major works of Nolde, as does the Folkwang Museum in Essen.
 
Bernd und Hilla Becher
The creative couple from Düsseldorf ranks among the leading representatives of contemporary photography. They are known particularly for their black and white photos of shaft and water towers or gasometers. They are to be found worldwide in numerous museums and private collections. In Germany, the Photography Collection/SK Cultural Foundation Cologne Mediapark and the Art Collection North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf own important Becher photographs.

Otto Dix
One of the major German artists of 20th century.
His war-paintings and portraits vividly reflect his ambivalent realism. Many of his works are at the Stuttgart Kunstmuseum.

Käthe Kollwitz
A committed pacifist and socialist, this great artist fought with her prints and sculptures against war and social injustice. The Kollwitz Museum in Cologne owns a substantial Kollwitz collection.

Ludwig Kirchner
Famous German expressionist, co-founder of the artists group "Die Brücke", known above all for his female nudes in natural surroundings and his urban paintings of modern Berlin around 1900.

Paul Klee
Member of the "Blue Rider" group and Professor at the Bauhaus, known particularly for his paintings of colourful multi-partitioned images areas. Ranks among the major representatives of modern art.

Jörg Immendorf
One of the major postwar artists in Germany.
Beuys disciple and representative of modern history painting. Particularly well-known: "Café Deutschland" a series of large-format paintings where fictitious political and cultural personalities symbolise the past conflict between the East and West Germany. Painted the official portrait of former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
