Christmas Markets in the West of Germany

Germany's elegant towns and cities in the west of the country hold some of the country's most traditional Christmas markets.

Dating back over 600 years the Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of Germany´s most popular Christmas markets. Take a stroll across the market and enjoy the wonderful aroma of baked apples, roasted nuts, gingerbread and mulled wine - quite a contrast to the ever-present Frankfurt Skyline in the background! The Christmas market is located throughout the city-centre at Roemerberg, Paulsplatz, Liebfrauenberg, Fahrtor, and Mainkai.

Every year Düsseldorf's Christmas market opens its "gingerbread houses" not far from Königsallee. Corneliusplatz Square has a huge outdoor ice rink offering fun for all the family into the New Year - ice skating is free and there are instructors and childcare facilities.

The city of Cologne offers six Christmas markets in total and attracts over 2 million visitors each year. The market at the Cologne Cathedral is the most impressive due to the imposing backdrop of the city's huge cathedral spires. The Christmas market on the Alter Markt takes place in front of the city hall and with its half-timbered stalls has an especially idyllic atmosphere. Cologne's oldest Christmas market is the market on the Neumarkt, in the shopping area. The market on the Rudolfplatz takes place in front of the Hahnentorburg. Besides the four big Christmas markets there is also a medieval Christmas market outside the Chocolate Museum and a floating Christmas market on board MS Wappen von Mainz (KD Riverboats) alongside the old quarter.
