Starnberg
The Upper Bavarian town of Starnberg is known primarily for the lake of the same name. Known as the 'royal lake', Lake Starnberg contains more water than any other in Germany apart from Lake Constance and is a popular destination in southern Germany with maritime flair. Other highlights in the town include Starnberg Castle, which was first mentioned in 1244, and Schloss Leutstetten, a country house on top of a hill with incredible views. Visitors can also walk around the extensive park or marvel at the remains of a Roman estate that was found here. Dating from the 16th century, the building was owned by Prince Ludwig of Bavaria who went on to become King Ludwig III, and was a popular residence with the Wittelsbach dynasty.
