Hamburg - Opening of 'BallinStadt'
Exactly one hundred years after Albert Ballin had completed the 'emigrant halls' for European emigrants on the Elbe River's Veddel, a part of this "Emigrant City" will emerge again at the historical place. Three reconstructed settlement pavilions will house the museum complex where visitors from around the globe will be able to gain an authentic impression of the conditions under which last century's European emigrants traveled across the Atlantic to start a new life in America.
Apart from its historic edutainment attractions, the BallinStadt will also provide a range of hospitality services during but also after the museum's official opening hours. It will also serve as a venue for special exhibitions and cultural events.
A special feature is the integration of the research project 'Link to your roots'.

Travemuende - Sand world
75 sand-sculptors - so-called "Carvers" - coming from all over the world are building masterpieces out of 9.000 t sand, just with sand and water, with heights up to twelve meters and are creating a fantastic sculpture scenery on the Baltic Sea Beach of Travemünde, which is singular in Germany. During the first three days after inauguration, visitors have the unique opportunity to have a look at the sand artists work while they are adding the final touch to their masterpieces by using special sculpture sand. Because of its angular grain structure, the sand is stackable in height and remains smooth and in perfect shape for several weeks after "carving" and sand cutting.
