Places of interest

The spa town of Bad Langensalza is renowned for its rose gardens. It is the second largest town in the district of Unstrut-Hainich and lies on the river Salza in the western region of the Thuringian heartland. The spa gardens, medieval Marktstrasse, Friederike villa and many other historic attractions, gardens and parks all give a romantic air to the town.

Spa gardens
The enchanting spa gardens are located near the Friederike villa alongside the town wall and are popular with visitors looking for peaceful surroundings. It forms part of the green belt which surrounds the old town and connects the historic town centre with the spa assembly rooms and gardens. Modern fountains made from local travertine grace the entrance to the park. Colourful herbaceous borders and mature trees line the footpaths and promenades and there is also a babbling brook, all of which make this a great place for recreation and relaxation.

Marktstrasse
In days gone by, Marktstrasse was part of the old Mainz-Eisenach-Leipzig trade route. Along this street are typical smallholders' houses which were rebuilt after the great town fire of 1711. The large amount of wood and stucco ornamentation on the skilfully restored entrance portals, gates and supporting beams are testimony to the wealth of former owners.

Friederike villa
This rococo residence with its romantic garden is a real gem set amidst the delightful surroundings of the spa gardens. It is located right on the promenade which runs alongside the well-preserved medieval town wall and has a romantic garden containing an orangery, well house, coachhouse and cavaliers' house. In the 18th century this baroque villa served as the summer residence of the widowed Duchess Friederike of Saxe-Weissenfels.
