Places of interest

Bad Schandau is one of the largest hydrotherapy resorts in the Elbe valley, set in the stunning countryside of Saxon Switzerland. The town is located on the right hand side of the river Elbe. Its skyline is characterised by the late 19th century hotels which line the river, as well as two bridges and many other local attractions. The Sendig fountain and villas are testimony to the work of Rudolf Sendig – one of the region’s benefactors. You can also find elements of his work in the spa gardens.

Sendig fountain
In 1896, Rudolf Sendig, the greatest patron of spa facilities in Bad Schandau, had a Gründerzeit art nouveau fountain erected in the market square, a previously rather unassuming place. It was officially opened in the autumn of that year and was welcomed with enthusiasm by the town’s residents. This was the temporary high point of the town’s architectural development which led to Bad Schandau becoming a health and holiday resort.

Spa gardens
The spa gardens were created in 1873 and still contain some of the original trees. They were redeveloped in 1994 and a fountain was constructed using the types of stone found in the region such as granite and sandstone. The fountain has 2 metre high basalt columns, yet another type of stone found in Saxon Switzerland. Konzertplatz square is located on Badallee. Various excellent orchestras enrich the town's cultural scene, just as the musicians that once lived in Bad Schandau contributed to its valuable traditions and cultural heritage.

Wooden Sendig villas
In the village of Ostrau on its beautiful plateau, the hotelier Rudolf Sendig had magnificent wooden villas constructed in the style of country houses, together with beautiful promenades, in 1903. The houses in the "villa district" were equipped with all modern comforts such as electric light and running water and several hundred workers were required to for their construction.
