Places of interest

In the spa resort of Bad Suderode with its calcium-rich saltwater, Mother Nature has created a wonderful place at the centre of the Harz where the rain falls more softly, the sun shines more pleasantly and the wind blows more gently than anywhere else. The climate here is absolutely ideal. The intricate details of the late 19th century villa-style architecture and the spa centre give the town its distinctive flair. The old village church with its Romanesque architectural features and frescoes is still an impressive sight to behold.

Villa-style architecture
A wealth of charming inns and guesthouses with intricate wooden balconies still dominate the appearance of Bad Suderode. The balconies and loggias are mainly attached to the side of the guesthouses under the eaves and date predominantly from the late 19th century. They were designed to provide spa visitors with a comfortable and sheltered place from which to enjoy the fresh, healthy Harz air. After all, sunbathing was considered rather improper in the 19th century.

Spa centre
Set in an idyllic location in the spa gardens, the extensive spa centre houses the 32°C calcium saltwater baths along with saunas, a fitness centre, bathing house, pump room, the tourist information and the spa assembly rooms with conference and catering facilities. The spa resort's signature attraction is the Behringer pump room built in the form of a temple in 1934. Situated at the centre of the spa gardens and often used as a venue for open-air events, it is the ideal place from which to start a walking tour or access the Nordic walking course.

Old village church
The old village church is probably the oldest building in the town. Its foundations and the tower date from the Romanesque period. Inside there is a well-preserved, late Romanesque arch frieze. Today, the old church is used as a venue for concerts, readings and regular special exhibitions.
