Places of interest

Now a state spa and mineral spa in the Teutoburg Forest, Bad Salzuflen first became known in the middle of the 11th century through its lucrative salt trade. Situated in the Salze Valley, it has a wealth of magnificent patrician town houses and a wonderful old quarter dating from the Weser Renaissance period. There are a number of impressive buildings in the spa district including the spa centre and the pump room.

Spa centre
Bad Salzuflen's royal spa centre was inaugurated in the presence of the royal family in July 1900 after a two year construction period. Built in the neo-Renaissance style, the spa centre was equipped and furnished in keeping with the period. It was completely destroyed after a devastating fire in December 1987. The new spa centre with its blend of historical building materials and ultra-modern architecture was built on top of the remaining walls.

Old quarter
The town's lovingly restored old quarter is well worth a visit. Take a tour and admire the variety of different architectural styles: the late-Gothic town hall dating from 1545, the Old Mayor's House from 1564 and Backs House with its impressive gables and carved façade are particularly striking. The attractive town is a marvellous blend of the new and the old: a stroll through the pedestrian area takes you past a number of historical town houses as well as modern shops, boutiques and restaurants. The river Salze with its leafy banks runs right through the centre of town.

Pump room
The pump room has been in operation since 1961. Encompassing an area of 1,600m², the striking building has a glass frontage that looks out onto the spa gardens. Situated in the centre of the building is the fountain room where spa visitors can take the beneficial waters from three drinking fountains. Arrangements of seasonal greenery and flowers give the pump room a mediterranean feel.
