Life with the river: bird country

Photo: Wandermagazin - issue 11. The Elbe river not far from Mount Kiepenberg
It is quiet in Schnackenburg. The eight gnarled branches of the old oak tree at the Border Country Museum reach into the dusky sky like the arms of a candelabra.

Elbe country is bird country. Between Schnackenburg and Bleckede there is a remarkable river landscape left and right of the river. Riverbank meadows, cut-off meanders, ponds, marshes and, in between, serpentine streams, copses and the Elbe, the river of life.
The Elbe valley meadows biosphere reserve has the highest level of protection as a breeding, resting and overwintering ground for over 150 species of birds.
