Life by the river: the Altmark

Antiqua Marchia - the Altmark region. The river Elbe, its link with the sea, is its lifeblood. Life by the river - towns sprang up along the Elbe in the Altmark: Tangermünde, Werben, Havelberg and, moving away from the river, Stendal, Osterburg, Seehausen, Gardelegen and Salzwedel. Gold thalers and florins flowed. Trade flourished, the towns grew.

The medieval streets were full of brick splendour, as can still be seen today. Anything that could not be transported by river would rumble through the countryside on a cart or on horseback. Eight Altmark towns were members of the powerful Hanseatic League. The Elbe brought wealth to the people of Tangermünde.
