The North Sea
Longer, wider, lovelier: beaches straight from a picture book
The North Sea coast has many wide beaches, but the widest of all is at St. Peter-Ording. 12 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide, it is called the "biggest sandpit in the world". The East Frisian islands of Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge have beaches that go on for miles, often with dunes. So too do the North Frisian islands Amrum, Föhr and Sylt. At high tide, the waves are perfect for having fun in the water - great for splashing about, swimming and many water sports. Wicker beach chairs with bright striped cushions are dotted about in profusion and make a great impact on holiday photos.
