The majority of Germany lies within the moderate, maritime climate zone. Large fluctuations in temperature are rare. Rain falls throughout the year. The average daytime winter temperature is 35.6° F in the North German Plain and 20° F in the mountains. Average daytime temperatures in July range between 72° F in the North German Plain and 77° F in the sheltered valleys of the south. Exceptions include the upper Rhine plains with their very mild climate, Upper Bavaria which is influenced by the föhn, a warm Alpine wind that blows in from the south, and the Harz mountains, which have their own microclimate with harsh winds, cool summers and snowy winters.
Generally, the following rule of thumb can be considered when packing for your trip: The further north towards the sea you travel the cooler are the summers and the milder and more humid are the winters. The further south you go the hotter are the summers and colder and snowier are the winters (except Lake Constance and the Rhine Valley where the winters are rather mild, and the mountains where the summers are rather cold). Best season to travel is usually May/June and September/early October.
