Accessible Travel by Air

Germany's airports are accessible for wheelchairs, and disabled-friendly restrooms are widely available. Some airports have already installed a guidance system for blind and visually disabled passengers. Furthermore, most airports offer an assistance service at check-in as well as for luggage transportation and aircraft boarding.

The following preparations should be considered when traveling by plane:

Before you depart, please contact your doctor for further advice.

When booking your travel arrangements, please inform your travel agent and airline about your disabilities. The flight crew will assist you during your flight.

When booking your flight indicate the dimensions of your wheelchair. If your wheelchair is battery operated, please inform the airline of the battery type. Gel and dry batteries can stay on the wheelchair and do not require any special attention for transportation. However, the batteries must be secured, disconnected and the poles covered before check-in. Wheelchairs operated by acid batteries are subject to specific transportation rules and requirements. Your airline will provide more detailed information.

Please contact your airline again at least 48 hours before departure to confirm arrangements.

Please make sure that you take all your medical certificates with you.
