Accessible Berlin

Brandenburg Gate in Berlin at night, Copyright GNTO
Berlin is the capital of Germany, where The Wall fell and German reunification began.
In recent years, the city of Berlin has facilitated the travel for physically challenged people tremendously: Train stations are fully accessible for people who use wheelchairs and busses are also equipped to accommodate wheelchairs; newly built public establishments such as cinemas, theaters or shopping malls have been designed to ensure barrier-free access to all areas. Furthermore, citizens with disabilities have developed their own projects, such as theater groups, cafés, clubs and various self-help groups, which offer support and information for disabled locals and visitors as well as non-disabled people.

Furthermore, the public transportation authority of Berlin (BVG) has installed guidance stripes at over 40 subway stations. The surface of these stripes is corrugated to mark the edge of the platforms.
The new public busses are equipped with a ramp that can be lowered, in order to permit convenient access for wheelchairs and assistive devices. These ramps are placed at the center door of the bus and are used on over 100 bus routes.
