Permanent exhibitions

Kassel German Wallpaper Museum, copyright Kassel Tourist GmbH
Permanent exhibitions offer an interesting insight into Kassel's history and a range of specific themes. The Hessian State Museum has a number of exhibition rooms covering prehistory and early history, arts and crafts, and sculpture, as well as the German Wallpaper Museum. The Museum of Sepulchral Culture is the only one of its kind in Germany.

Hessian State Museum
From Königsstrasse you have a direct view of the Hessian State Museum, which has a tower on top and was built by Theodor Fischer in 1908-1913. The museum has a number of exhibition rooms covering prehistory and early history, arts and crafts, and sculpture, as well as the German Wallpaper Museum.

Museum of Sepulchral Culture
Death, mourning and remembrance are the central themes dealt with by the Museum of Sepulchral Culture. The only one of its kind in Germany, the museum was opened in 1992 and houses a wide range of sepulchral objects from shrouds, coffins, funeral carriages and mourning costume to a number of pictures and, last but not least, reflections on the theme by contemporary artists.

German Wallpaper Museum
The museum contains a fascinating collection of historical wallcoverings including highlights from the history of wallcoverings and valuable objects from every continent dating back over the centuries. The museum's most valuable objects are some gold and leather wallcoverings from the baroque period, which were later replaced by more reasonably-priced materials such as linen, oilcloth and paper.
