Museums

The Zweibrücken Municipal Museum is housed in the former home of the famous court painter Johann Christian von Mannlich (1740-1822). A permanent exhibition documents the changing history of the town and its surroundings. There are more than five rooms explaining events and displaying finds from early and ancient history, the Roman Empire, the baroque period and World War II. There are also regular special exhibitions on subjects of contemporary interest.
The name of this former Gallo-Roman town is still unknown but it is thought to have been an important trading centre until around 275 AD. Today it is one of the most important cultural monuments in Saarland. Systematic excavations since the 1950s have uncovered ancient pottery as well as evidence that people were working with wool, wood and iron. One part of the town has been turned into an attractive open air museum.
